Why Buy Local Flowers?

Why buy locally grown flowers? Approximately 80% of flowers used in the floral trade are shipped from other countries, mainly South America. The majority of these flowers are grown with the heavy use of chemicals and pesticides in less than ideal working conditions. Flowers are treated again with chemicals before being bunched, packed into boxes without a water source, then shipped to the States. It doesn't stop there. There are usually at least two more delivery points before these flowers finally make it into the hands of your local florist. By the time they reach their destination here, they are sometimes already a week to two weeks old. When you source locally grown flowers, you are leaving less of a carbon footprint, supporting a family in your own community, and leaving the harsh chemicals out of your home.
